Revelers gathered at Albany City Hall during the first minutes of Sunday (July 24) to witness and participate in some of the first same-sex marriages to take place in New York state. The carillon chimed at midnight, ringing in the legislation and the nuptials. Mayor Jerry Jennings officiated the weddings, and Sen. Neil Breslin delivered the speech he was set to deliver in the Senate chamber the day the marriage bill passed—before the rules were changed to stop legislators from speaking on the bill.
