After the Flood

by Erin Pihlaja on August 30, 2012

The empty lot where Waszczak's home once stood.

Dona Waszczak had to rebuild completely after Hurricane Irene destroyed her house on Priddle Road in Esperance. The tropical storm hit New York State on Aug. 28, 2011, and caused billions of dollars in total damage nationwide. Waszczak spent six months in a trailer while she rebuilt her new domicile across from the empty lot where her home of 23 years once stood. She is one of the lucky few who are able to return to the devastated street, where debris from flood waters still clings to the trees along the creek. “This is paradise,” Waszczak said. “There’s always a price for paradise.”
