Judging by the tone of Tuesday’s (Sept. 11) debate between incumbent Sen. Roy McDonald (R-Saratoga) and challenger Kathy Marchione, the Republican primary race for the 43rd district New York State Senate seat is beyond ugly. Marchione’s opening remarks were heavy with insults, and it got worse as the night went on. Whether or not McDonald keeps his seat will largely be decided on how voters view his actions last year, when he voted to support the Marriage Equality Act. At the debate, McDonald said, “I’m a grandfather of five, I’ve worked hard all my life, I came from a poor section of town, I’m not going to exclude anybody from America.”
