“It’s a short list of jazz pianists who have the wherewithal to drop a J Dilla reference into a Thelonious Monk cover, but not many jazz pianists are Robert Glasper.” This is what the Los Angeles Times had to say about Glasper’s rare comfort in both the jazz and hip-hop genres. He’s put out a handful of records on the esteemed Blue Note label, but he’s also recorded with Q Tip and Kanye West. On his four-piece “Experiment’s” latest record, Black Radio, guests range from Mos Def to Erykah Badu, Lupe Fiasco to Me’shell Ndegeocello. Tracks range from standards like “Afro Blue” to David Bowie and Nirvana covers.
As Glasper himself describes it, the music has “more of an urban, hip-hop, soul kind of vibe, but the spine of it all is still a jazz spine.”
The Robert Glasper Experiment will come to the Egg (Empire State Plaza, Albany) on Sunday (Oct. 7) at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $24. Call 473-1845 for more info.
