Pretty Lights

by Metroland Staff on November 1, 2012

TIMES UNION CENTER, FRIDAY

Derek Vincent Smith, AKA the electronic music innovator behind Pretty Lights, seems to have  won over the graces of festivalgoers while gaining considerable recognition for his eclectic sound. Whether mixing up a soulful Etta James classic or reworking his own version of John Denver’s “Country Roads,” Smith has become one of the country’s largest touring DJs, combining dub, dubstep, hip-hop, classic rock and house. In 2011, Smith released two albums on his record label Pretty Lights Music that conveniently offers free downloads to the public for any artist under the label. Bonobo and Elliot Lipp will open for this mammoth night of EDM. How can the Albany police justify ending electronic shows at the Armory when the biggest venue in town is doing the same stuff on an even larger scale? Crazy. (Nov. 2, 8 PM, $35, 51 South Pearl St., Albany, 487-2000)
