Twinkies, an icon of processed junk food, may disappear. Panic ensued last week when Hostess Brands Inc., creator of Twinkies, Wonder Bread and various other baked goods, announced that it would shutter operations at its 33 bakeries, 565 distribution centers, and 570 outlet stores (like 161 Troy-Schenectady Road in Watervliet, pictured here); and lay off more than 18,000 workers. The company blamed a union strike for the closures and filed bankruptcy in an attempt to liquidate its assets. A bankruptcy judge denied that request earlier this week and encouraged management and union leaders to enter mediation.
