Billy Martin and Wil Blades Duo

by Metroland Staff on January 10, 2013

After improvising with organist John Medeski for so many years, drummer Billy Martin must have felt a bit adulterous starting a new, funky organ duo with young Chicagoan Wil Blades. Then again, jazz musicians have always been delightfully polyamorous about their collaborations, and the new group have definitely started something special. Leaning on the classic sound of soul-jazz organists like Groove Holmes and Brother Jack McDuff, the duo have a decidedly New Orleans feel but with a spirit of adventure fitting to each other’s monstrous chops.
