Based on a novel by John Buchan, Alfred Hitchcock’s film The 39 Steps took the spy novel and turned it on its ear with a pleasing combination of show-stopping set pieces (including a fleeing couple handcuffed together, and the hero eluding capture with a brilliant, off-the-cuff bit of public speaking) and the director’s familiar obsessions (a wrongfully accused protagonist, a beautiful blonde). Patrick Barlow’s international hit stage version, which The New York Times called “absurdly enjoyable,” will be presented beginning this weekend by Home Made Theater. The show captures the fun and suspense of the classic film, while adding just the right amount of absurdity to the proceedings.
HMT’s production stars Conrad Browne Lőrcher as Richard Hannay (right) and Molly McGrath (pictured left), and is directed by Dianne O’Neill Filer.
Home Made Theater will present The 39 Steps beginning Friday (Feb. 8) at 8 PM and continuing through Feb. 24 at the Spa Little Theater (Saratoga Spa State Park, Saratoga Springs). Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 PM, with 2 PM matinees on Feb. 17 and 24. Tickets are $26, $23. For more info, call 587-4427.
