From Off-Broadway to Broadway to stages around the world, this Tony-winning musical celebration of the great Nigerian musician Fela Kuti has been a sensation since its 2009 debut. And, now, a road-company version rolls into Schenectady tomorrow for a two-day stand at Proctors.
With award-winning choreography by Bill T. Jones and the music of the late Kuti himself, Fela! is pure energy. When the show returned briefly to Broadway in summer 2012, The New York Times’ Ben Brantley wrote, “[Fela!] translates one man’s life into a nonstop banquet of movement both sensuous and angry. And though this production has been on the road . . . pretty much nonstop since it last saw Broadway, it shows no signs whatsoever of flagging.”
The cast of this touring company will include Michelle Williams, most recently seen at the Super Bowl halftime show where she was reunited with her Destiny’s Child bandmates Kelly Rowland and Beyoncé.
Fela! will be presented tomorrow (Friday, March 8) at 8 PM and Saturday (March 9) at 2 and 8 PM on the Mainstage at Proctors (432 State St., Schenectady). Tickets are $20-$65. For more info, call the box office at 346-6204.
