Thousands of people gathered in West Capitol Park on Thursday (Feb. 28) to protest Gov. Cuomo’s Secure Ammunition and Firearms (SAFE) Act, signed in January. Buses carried people in from across the state for the rally, which was organized by the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association. David Keane, president of the National Rifle Association, spoke at the event alongside legislators who voted “no” on the bill. Activists brought NRA signs and “Don’t Tread On Me” flags, and several had posters of Cuomo disguised as Hitler. Lawsuits have been filed against the act, and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Speaker has said that discussions about some of the law’s provisions are on the table.
