There was a period of time (in 1998) when core Metric duo James Shaw and Emily Haines were living in a Williamsburg loft with members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio and Liars. Had they stayed in Brooklyn for indie rock’s explosion in the early aughts, the legacy of the Toronto-based band would likely be quite different. For one, they wouldn’t have won any of their nine Juno Awards, Polaris Music Prizes and CASBY Awards—Canada’s biggest musical honors.
Needless to say, Metric are now a pretty big deal in Canada, and Shaw and Haines’ work with Toronto’s biggest export (no, not crack-smoking mayors), Broken Social Scene, has only strengthened their cachet. Last year’s Synthetica netted Metric three Junos and a CASBY, including Alternative Album of the Year.
Metric will play the Upstate Concert Hall (1208 Route 146, Clifton Park) tonight (Thursday, June 6) at 8 PM. Tickets are $27. Call 371-0012 for more info.
