Chic Gamine

by The Staff on June 28, 2013

Red Square, Friday

None other than Mavis Staples herself has compared Canadian quintet  Chic Gamine to great ’60s girl groups like the Staple Singers. The Juno-winning group doesn’t exclusively deal in nostalgia, though. Theirs is a melange of wall-of-sound harmonies with French pop, Brazilian roots and 21st century indie sensibilities. With two records under their belts, the group played the Vancouver Olympics in 2010 and has only toured on a larger scale ever since. Closer was released earlier this year and stands as their best. Their Red Square set will be bookended by two of Albany’s strongest female singer-sngwriters, MaryLeigh Roohan and Olivia Quillio. (June 28, 8 PM, $12, 388 Broadway, Albany, 465-0444)
