Two-time Tony Award nominee Christine Andreas is Judy Garland in this world-premiere drama about the diva’s late-in-life relationship with playwright and songwriter John Meyer, who not only wrote this play, but also the memoir on which Heartbreaker is based.
When Meyer met Garland she was at the end of her rope: broke, without a job and deep into the addictions that had plagued her for decades. He wrote songs for her—which she sang in an appearance on The Merv Griffin Show, among other outlets—and helped her more-or-less “maintain,” until the chaos she embraced overwhelmed him.
It’s a coming-of-age story, placed along side a complex portrait of one of the 20th century’s most gifted entertainers.
Adirondack Theatre Festival’s production of Heartbreaker: Two Months with Judy Garland runs through July 6 at the Charles R. Wood Theater (207 Glen St., Glens Falls). Tickets are $25-$40. For tickets and info, visit atfestival.org or call 874-0800.
