Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

Wait! I know you may be allergic to any band with the word “blues” in their name, but this isn’t just another bunch of dads playing Eric Clapton riffs in the basement man cave. Since 1991, Brown-educated semiotics student Jon Spencer has been using the traditional American form for its traditional American purpose: expressing human experience without regard to the status quo—staying fresher than the oppressor. The liner notes of his ’97 record Controversial Negro (depicting Mick Jagger) heralded the band as daring to “treat the blues like something other than a sacred museum piece.” By, yes, basically blowing it up.
