Fun fact: In 16th- and 17th-century Europe, anatomical dissection was a public event. Tickets were sold. The dissections were held in a space very much like a theater. These events had scientific, artistic and social significance.

French artist Julien Maire’s performance Open Core, which will be presented Friday at EMPAC, is based on this peculiar genre of inquiry-performance; instead of human remains, however, he deconstructs cameras. It is “an attempt to metaphorically and empirically reveal the movement-image,” and provoke a series of “anticipated catastrophes.” It’s an “optical journey into the body of machines.”

Julien Maire will perform Open Core tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 20) at 7 PM at EMPAC’s Studio 2 (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy). For more info, including ticket availability and prices, call the EMPAC box office at 276-3921.
