Godspell opened Off-Broadway in 1971 and has never really gone away. Productions followed in London, where the cast included Jeremy Irons, and a legendary Toronto version that starred Victor Garber alongside a half-dozen future comedy legends, and gave Paul Shafer his start as a musical director.
The musical is based on the Gospel of St. Matthew, and has a loose ’70s feel that has not dated at all. The memorable songs by Stephen Schwartz include “By My Side” and the insanely catchy pop hit “Day by Day.” Don’t take our word for it; check out the touring company of the recent Broadway revival when it comes to Proctors on Saturday for two shows.
Godspell will be performed Saturday (Nov. 9) at 2 and 8 PM on the Mainstage at Proctors (432 State St., Schenectady). Tickets are $20 to $60. For more info, call the box office at 346-6204.
