Set in a rural Texas town at the time of the Korean War, The Last Picture Show is a portrait of America in decline. The old world that’s passing away is symbolized by Sam “the Lion” (Oscar winner Ben Johnson), a stand-in for an honorable, small-town West. The teenagers who make up the film’s coming-of-age story—wonderfully played by Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd (pictured left), Timothy Bottoms and Randy Quaid—are both figures of sympathy and part of harsher world to come. Ellen Burstyn and Cloris Leachman also star.
The Last Picture Show will be screened Saturday (Dec. 28) at 7:30 PM at the Spring Street Gallery (110 Spring St., Saratoga Springs). Admission is free, but seating is limited. For more info, call Saratoga Film Forum at 584-3456.
