The world, judging from box office results and TV ratings, has been again beguiled by Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective. First there were the films with Robert Downey, Jr., and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson; then followed the present-day BBC show with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman; and finally the set-in-contemporary-New York Elementary with Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu.
Those, however, are all “modern” glosses on the Sherlock Holmes. Schenectady Civic Players will take audiences back to the Victorian detective with Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, Steven Dietz’s adaptation of the original 1899 play by William Gillette and Doyle himself. Directed by Aaron Holbritter, this production stars Tom Templeton (left) as Holmes, Ian LaChance as Watson and Isaac Newberry (right) as Professor Moriarty.
Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure opens tomorrow (Friday, Jan. 24) at 8 PM at Schenectady Civic Playhouse (12 S. Church St., Schenectady) and runs through Feb. 2. Performances are Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 PM; Friday and Saturday at 8 PM; and Sunday at 2:30 PM. Tickets are $17. For more info, call 382-2081.
