Sharon Van Etten

Club Helsinki, Friday

Singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten knows that she plays primarily sad songs. She offered a chipper apology for this fact last time she played Club Helsinki. So, it’s OK to cry if you want to. You’ll be in good company at this one. Van Etten is about to release Are We There, her fourth album, which includes contributions from fellow queen of melancholia Jana Hunter of Lower Dens. By the sounds of it, she’s expanded the sonic pallette from her early guitar-harmonium-voice work to include rock instruments purportedly used by John Lennon and Patti Smith.
