Audiences have had to learn to take Beck seriously. It’s not that he hasn’t always garnered acclaim and respect from his fanbase, since debuting Golden Feelings in 1993. In fact, many still long for the young Beck, ironically crossing genres and spinning nonsensical lyrics you could dance to.

But then Sea Change came along in 2002 and Beck got real. Simple acoustic guitar figures, emotionally direct lyrics and melancholic electronics replaced the hip-hop grooves and postmodern smirk. This is the Beck who will be playing MASS MoCA on Tuesday, touring for his 12th album, Morning Phase. Regarded as a companion piece to Sea Change, Morning Phase is just the first of two records Beck had been planning for 2014 (the other is still unannounced), so you may still get your chance to “get crazy with the Cheese Whiz” at this one after all.

Opening the show will be the GOASTT, featuring Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl.

Beck will play MASS MoCA (87 Marshall St., North Adams, Mass.) on Tuesday (June 24) at 8:30 PM. Tickets are $54. Call (413) 664-4481 for more info.
