What does it mean to be an African in 2014?

This question is at the core of Zimbabwean singer-songwriter Netsayi’s music. Dubbed the “Queen of Afrofolk,” her answer comes in contemporary colors and traditional rhythms. Originally a filmmaker, the London-based performer transitioned to the music world when she realized the medium better suited the themes she wanted to pursue. Since 2006, she’s released two records and toured Europe with Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Mineral X is her forthcoming record, supported by her band Black Pressure, who perform as comfortably on rock instruments as they do on marimbas and kalimbas.

Netsayi will play MASS MoCA (87 Marshall St., North Adams, Mass.) on Saturday (July 19) at 8 PM. Tickets are $16. Call (413) 662-2111 for more info.
