Karavalli, 9B Johnson Road (Route 9R), Latham, 785-7600. Not your usual Indian fare. Here you’ll find dishes from all over the country, all of it sparkling with flavor, in a friendly and comfortable setting. Serving lunch Mon-Fri 11:30-2:30, dinner Sun-Thu 5-10, Fri-Sat 5-11, brunch Sat-Sun noon-2. AE, MC, V.

The Whistling Kettle, 24 Front St., Ballston Spa, 884-2664. Tea—more than 80 varieties of loose tea in all colors and flavors—with a menu of salads, panini, scones, cakes, and more, including a classic high tea menu. And it’s a handsome, relaxing place. Serving Sun-Mon 11-5, Tue-Wed 11-6, Thu-Sat 11-7. AE, D, MC, V.

The Hidden Café, Delaware Plaza, 180 Delaware Ave., Delmar, 439-8800. Fine continental cuisine with a Mediterranean flavor, served in a comfortable if out-of-the-way setting. Serving Tue-Sat 11-3, 4:30-9. MC, V.

Lorenzo’s, 1733 Van Vranken Ave., Schenectady, 370-5455. Chef-owner Daniel DeLorenzo gives an upscale spin to Italian cookery right in the heart of Schenectady’s Italian-restaurant district. Try the Veal DeLorenzo or any of the wonderful pasta dishes. Serving Sun, Tue-Thu 5-10, Fri-Sat 5-11. AE, MC, V.

First Choice Caribbean American Cuisine, 451 Fulton St., Troy, 272-4544. Jerk or curried chicken, Jamaican pepper steak, callaloo—it’s the real thing here, with a bargain ($5.50) lunch buffet to boot. Serving lunch Mon-Fri 11:30-2, dinner Mon-Sat 11-9. MC, V.

The Artisan, 38 Caroline St., Saratoga Springs, 226-6111. A brief but innovative menu of well-crafted gourmet fare (try the scallops and lobster over cappellini) served in an art-rich room. Outdoor dining also is available. Serving dinner Wed-Mon, 5-close. D, MC, V.

Jacks Grill, Main Street, Housatonic, Mass., (413) 274-1000. Old-fashioned comfort food such as meat loaf, pot roast and spaghetti in homey surroundings in a sleepy (and lately artsy) Berkshire hamlet. Affordable, and all the more so if you order the $34 family-style dinner for four. Serving dinner Sun-Mon and Wed-Thu 5-9, Fri-Sat 5-10; brunch Sun 11-2. AE, MC, V.

Hattie’s, 45 Phila St., Saratoga Springs, 584-4790. The classic fried chick’en—along with a menu of gumbo, jambalaya, ribs and more—offered in the refurbished but nostalgic place that’s been at the same location for nearly 40 years. Serving daily through the summer 5-10, then Wed-Sun 5-10. Buffet night Tuesday. AE, DC, MC, V.

Fortune’s, Saratoga Gaming and Raceway, Crescent Avenue, Saratoga Springs, 581-5790. Order off the menu, which offers original takes on continental favorites, or visit the well-stocked buffet in this newly revamped fine-dining facility. Serving dinner Tue-Fri 5-10, Sat 3-5. AE, MC, V.
