Urgent and invigorating, the Netherlands-based company Club Guy & Roni was a highlight of the Jacob’s Pillow 75th anniversary season. In their U.S. debut, choreographers Guy Weizman and Roni Haver presented a fierce, edgy, athletic performance featuring six female dancers, each roaring at the center of her own universe. Playful and aggressive, the movement captured the unsettled female psyche with clarity and intent.

2. The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company

The Egg, June 8

Bill T. Jones has been known for revealing a mosaic of diversity on stage, with a mélange of ethnicities, body types and movement styles. After 25 years, his work is strikingly relevant, addressing global tensions and intensely intimate human relationships. His recent work In Another Evening: I Bow Down, is in the epic storytelling tradition Jones has perfected, with the surprising addition of a young Bronx-based hardcore band performing live on stage.

3. New York City Ballet

Saratoga Performing Arts Center, July 15

With renewed community support, the New York City Ballet has reclaimed its summer home on the stage that was designed to feature the choreography of the Ballet’s founder, George Balanchine. This summer’s program featured Balanchine’s iconic 1948 piece Serenade, honoring Darci Kistler in the lead role amid a striking corps de ballet cloaked in ankle-length blue gowns.

4. Ballet Folklórico de México

The Egg, Oct. 24

Extraordinary costumes, percussive foot stomping and live Mariachi music transformed the Egg into a festival of dance, music and culture. Indigenous ceremonial dances, regional traditions and Spanish-influenced flamenco expressed the diversity of Mexican dance.

5. Mark Morris Dance Group

The Egg, Nov. 16

Mark Morris Dance Group performed well with its usual athleticism and crisp choreography. However, the highlight of their visit to Albany was the unveiling of an inspiring educational program that the company has developed at their new Brooklyn studio, which offers community classes for children and adults with disabilities.
