Ginger
Man Wine Bar & Restaurant
Manager Julie Byron
234 Western Ave., Albany, 427-5963, albanygingerman.com
In Vino Veritas! Let me introduce you to the Ginger Man Wine
Bar and Restaurant. In May 1983, owners Michael and Patricia
Byron took on the challenge of opening the first wine bar
in Albany. Although no strangers to the restaurant business,
Mike and Pat spent much time, energy, and hard work combining
a dynamic wine list along with a small, light-fare menu. Throughout
the years, the Ginger Man has catered to legislators, politicians,
state workers, wine lovers, and connoisseurs alike. Its vast
selection, singularity, and excellent price-range allows a
customer to be diverse and offers plenty of room for exploration.
We are open for lunch Monday through Friday, and dinner Monday
through Saturday. All lunch, dinner, and wine lists change
seasonally. Our wine list offers generous selections from
around the world with major wine regions referencing a description
of each grape variety and vintage. Our cruvinet system adds
breadth to the wine list representing the classic traditional
wines as well as new and trendy selections. Between our wine
list and cruvinet, we serve approximately 75 wines by the
glass, and 140 bottles. All menus offer creative, unique sampling
flights including appetizers, wine, beer, scotch and small-batch
bourbon. Its unique atmosphere provides a warm feeling whether
you choose to linger over lunch, dinner or our famous seasonal
fruit and cheese boards, charcuterie platter or house-made
dessert paired with our wide selection of ports, grappas and
liquors. The Ginger Man is the perfect place for the casual
wine lover, a business meeting or a special date. We have
parking in the rear of the building open for private parties.

El
Mariachi
Owners Freddie Bhola, Patty Bermejo-Bhola and Marco Bermejo
144 Washington Ave., Albany 465-2568; 289 Hamilton St., Albany,
432-7580;
Route 9 South Broadway, Saratoga springs, 581-5901, elmariachirestaurant.com
We began our family business in the Capital Region 12 years
ago. My parents come from Puebla, a beautiful colonial city
where the traditional cuisine and outstanding specialties
include mole poblano, pipian (a pumpkin seed sauce) and gorditas
poblanas. Other favorite dishes include pollo al chipotle,
tacos al carbon and cochinita pibil, which has also been selected
as “Dish of the Year” (Times Union).
I come (Patty Bermejo) from a family of five brothers who
have all been in the restaurant business for nearly 25 years.
With the strong family tradition that our parents taught us,
we managed to start up an authentic Mexican restaurant in
the Capital Region. We now have two locations in the downtown
Albany area and a third location in Saratoga Springs. At El
Mariachi II and III we put into practice one of my brother’s
expertise in Spanish cuisine, adding the Paella dishes and
other traditional seafood dishes from southern Spain.
Here at El Mariachi, our menu typifies the foods from our
hometown and other Mexican states. Our recipes have been handed
down from generation to generation, starting with our great-grandmothers.
Our tequila selection (over 80 choices, 100 percent agave!),
house-made Sangria, and special house-flavor margaritas are
among our customers favorites. I thank all of our loyal customers
for voting us No. 1 10 years in a row (Metroland’s
Best Of the Capital District Reader’s Poll, and Best Mexican
2008, as well as Best Outdoor Dining in 2007!), and my family
who stand together to keep the business growing.

Shalimar opened its doors on Jan. 22, 1992. Being the first
Pakistani-Indian restaurant in Albany, Shalimar enjoys a strong
following. The ownership team has upheld the traditions of
affordability, quality, service and cleanliness, and community
involvement, which have become synonymous with Shalimar.
Long-term employee relationships built over the years have
truly been instrumental in the success of the organization.
For 17 years in a row, the Metroland Reader’s Poll
has chosen Shalimar as the “Best Pakistani-Indian Restaurant”
and “Best Pakistani-Indian Buffet” in the Capital District.
Elissa
Halloran Designs
229 Lark St., Albany 432-7090, ehdesigns.com
I hope you made it to my 7th anniversary party during the
most recent First Friday, and got to try the fantastic martini
cookies made at Debbie’s Kitchen. I’m continuing to celebrate
by offering 10 percent off all jewelry for the month of March,
so there is still time for me to thank you in person for supporting
me all these years.
If you haven’t had a chance to check out my new location,
please do. I’m at 229 Lark, where I’ve built my dream store.
I have lots of room for jewelry, of course, plus artwork—wearable
and wall-able—from a lot of my artist friends. There’s an
alcove for fun and lovely consignment clothes, and I have
a studio perched above the jewelry cases. I am happy to work
with you on custom designs, including wedding orders.
Also in my studio, I make skeleton people. I’ve been working
a line of gardening related skeleton creatures, perfect for
whimsical gifts. I continue to feature kyanite in necklaces,
bracelets and earrings. The stone is a luscious blue, sometimes
streaked with silvery stripes, and is a favorite not just
of mine, but also of my customers.
New for spring are Beth Cunningham’s eye-catching and organic
stained glass pieces. Keep your eyes peeled for new spring
purses from costume designer Kim Sava, who uses only vintage
fabric. Jen Shepard’s cute and frilly purses have made even
tomboys feel girly. For April’s First Friday, I’m featuring
flower photography from local artists.

Her vision of a modern pin-up is enticing, creative and empowering.
A positive experience and a unique, sexy work of art is the
goal.
Collaborating with each client, Charl draws upon her 20 years

complete, discreet, in-house production. Sessions are edited
for beauty, and retouching magic is routinely performed. All

Albany
Metro-Mallers Semi-Professional Minor League Football Team
Owner, CEO Frank Rogers
1102 Western Ave., Albany 427-8414, metromallers.com
From 1968 to 1991, the Mallers dominated minor-league sports
in the Capital District. The team folded in 1992 and other
teams tried to replace the magic the Mallers created in 23
years of football excellence. After many failed attempts by
lesser known teams, the Mallers resurfaced in 2004 under the
leadership of general manager Joseph Barbagallo and team president
and owner Frank Rogers. Two league championships, one Eastern
Regional title and a National Championship appearance in the
Orange Bowl, Miami, has the Capital District excited once
again.
The Mallers—56-10 in 4 years—use their strong relationships
with the New York Giants (NFL), Calgary Stampede (CFL), and
Albany Conquest (AF2) to promote players in their quest for
a career in professional football. If you would like to try
out for the 2008 Mallers team or join our organization in
any capacity, please visit our Web site.
In addition to the Mallers, Frank Rogers built All-American
Sports Recreation, Inc. in 1996. The company creates recreational-sports
leagues for a variety of sports, and manages each league,
giving the recreational athlete a venue to compete at his/her
ability level. All of the leagues provide Web sites, officials,
and quality fields throughout the Capital District. Although
many of his leagues are for adults, kids have become excited
over the NFL youth flag-football program now played year round.

starving, the duo put their dream of making it big in the
music industry on hold so they could pursue another dream:
developing search-engine friendly, intuitive and extensible
e-commerce and content-management software. Helping businesses
get found online since 1998, Saratoga Springs based Mountain
Media has developed the most search-engine-friendly software
available today. Their solution is able to manage large organizational
Web sites as well as bring the products and services of smaller
entrepreneurs to the Web. This proprietary software, as seen
on CBS 6 News and in Practical Ecommerce magazine’s
“Notable Shopping Carts,” is the result of a decade of effort
by a development team obsessed with usability, improved search-engine
placement, flexibility and creating industry leading feature
sets. The company compliments its software applications with
a spectrum of hosting, search-engine marketing, online-payment
solutions and custom-application development. If you’re looking
to get a new site up and running, have been struggling with
your current site and need an upgrade, or need a special application
developed, the team of 13 Internet-obsessed gurus at Mountain
Media can get you on track.

Zombie

George Vasilakos, owner
1238 Central Ave., Albany, 438-7202, edenstudios.net/zombieplanet
My mission with Zombie Planet is to give the Capital District
a one-stop, full-service adventure-game store; a place for
people to find new and unique card, role-playing, and board
games to stimulate their minds, and to do something other
than sit behind a TV or computer screen. We specialize in
role-playing games like the cult classic (and our most popular)
Dungeons & Dragons. We also carry Magic: the Gathering
card game as well as the kid favorites—Pokemon and Yu-Gi-OH!
For the super-hero fans we have Heroclix, which is a collectible
miniature game using the heroes and villains from DC and Marvel
comics. Our second floor is open to people to play games on-site
and meet new players for their favorite games. What sets us
apart from other stores like us? We have a huge inventory
of product and a knowledgeable staff—plus a huge gaming space
for people to play.

Mary
Jane Books
Foxy and Annabelle
215 Western Ave. #3, Albany, 465-2238, maryjanebooks.com
Mary Jane wants to say “thank you” to the Capital Region for
a cool decade of “getting used” on the corner of Western and
Quail. In 1998, Mary Jane opened her doors to college students
and the local community. We stock primarily used textbooks
for University at Albany and Hudson Valley Community College,
and, most recently, Schenectady County Community College.
Mary Jane’s mission is to provide an affordable alternative
to on-campus college bookstores.
We primarily have a “counter service” operation, bringing
textbooks to you based on classes you’re taking, and if we
don’t have what you are looking for, we can easily order it
for you. We now can process orders through our Web site, which
is super-fabulous. If you see our big blue “Magic Bus” driving
around, hop on board, it’s “magically” running on vegetable
oil, and we love that fact, and we think you do, too.
Additionally, Mary Jane is more than just textbooks; we house
many fiction and non-fiction titles, foreign-language novels,
local-author publications, school supplies, (and the always
coveted), Mary Jane T-shirts. So stop in and check us out.
Thanks again Capital Region!
Bodywork
Professionals
Owner Nick Pavoldi
578 New Loudon Road, Latham 389-2200, BodyworkProfessionals.com
Our philosophy, “Bonsai Business”—small, cared for, and totally
rad.
Structural Integration was developed by Ida Rolf in the 1960’s.
Her research in connective-tissue properties and their relationship
to function led to the development of Structural Integration.
Some of her students called the work Rolfing.
Structural Integration takes advantage of the thixotropic
nature of connective tissue. With the addition of an applied
force, connective tissue can change shape. Injury or unsuccessful
patterns of movement can lead to limited function causing
pain or discomfort. Connective tissue tends to move to the
areas of strain. As a Structural Integration practitioner,
I look at those strained patterns and relationships in body
parts and use the connective tissue matrix to create more
successful movement patterns. It sounds a little boring, but
it’s really cool.
Bodywork Professionals is a natural progression of my work.
I have a space dedicated to bodywork, a staff who shares my
passion, enthusiasm, and willingness to try things even if
they haven’t been done before. One thing that hasn’t been
tried before is the Golden Ticket. Its 10 massages or 10 -
$50 vouchers to use for any other work we offer; like Structural
Integration. We have 23 left. Bodywork Professionals is friends
and neighbors with the Pilates Principle.
Diamond
Eight Billiards
Owner Irene Skawinski
9 Johnson Road, Latham 786-8048 www.diamondeight.com
Thank you Metroland readers for again voting us the
Best Billiard Room!
We’ve made some exciting changes in the past year to help
make your Diamond Eight experience even more fun! We have
recently added eight 7-foot pool tables to our room. Add that
to our thirteen 9-foot tables and billiard table, and what
do you have? More pool-playing choices. We’ve updated our
food menu with great-tasting wraps. You can even create your
own. We’ve added Trivia to our Monday night slate of entertainment.
Starting at 9:30 PM every Monday, Karaoke with Mark “the Shark”
starts off with a fun trivia contest. Multiple rounds, cool
rules and refreshing prizes make this trivia night fun and
relaxing. The APA leagues are still going strong. Last year,
three of our teams made it to Las Vegas to compete for the
National Title. One of those teams placed 5th in the 9-Ball
Championships! Ask us about the APA and how you can win a
trip to Las Vegas to compete for thousands of dollars. Diamond
Eight is still a great place to have your party. From birthdays
to corporate meetings, retirements to team-building, Diamond
Eight will help make your event one to remember. Ask us for
more information or visit our Web site. Diamond Eight Billiards
is still the best upscale billiard room and sports bar in
the Capital District. Thanks again for your support. Check

Towne
TV
3125 Carmen Road, Rotterdam 355-1020, townetv.com
You always get the “Best in Towne.” This slogan was coined
by my dad over 40 years ago. He and my mother founded Towne
TV in 1956 on a shoestring budget. They both worked other
jobs while building the business and their commitment to customer
service has been our reason for success in the highly competitive
home electronics and appliance business.
The slogan is still our core belief to this day and is the
passion that lies in our entire staff and especially the three
gentlemen pictured above. Paul DeMilio has been a Towne TV
employee for over 30 years and is our store manager. Paul
has a list of clients that won’t deal with anyone else in
the store. He’s our comic relief. Paul is also the deep voice
in you hear on all our commercials! Rick House is a 10-year
Towne TV employee and a 35-year veteran in the audio/video
business. Rick specializes in marketing our business and has
grown tremendously in the sales of custom installations to
our clients building new homes. Kevin Roberts has been with
Towne TV for over six years and is a 25-year veteran in the
home-electronics business. Kevin is the best multitasker I
have met and is a true people person.
These three experts have more experience than most stores
have on their entire staff. The three of them along with our
excellent administrative staff, and professional installation
and delivery teams are the reason for our business’s continuing
growth every year and building client list that includes some
of the most successful people in the Capital District.
At Towne TV we do our best to provide the best possible experience,
the best value and the best service after the sale to all
our clients so we can continue saying, “You always get the
best in Towne!”
Krispin’s
Automotive Repair
Krispin Vagnini
574 River St., Troy, 687-0304, krispinsauto.com
I started working on cars when I was very young, usually because
my friends and I could not afford to have anyone else fix
them. Through much trial and error, I found that I enjoyed
automotive repair. After attending the automotive program
at Hudson Valley Community College, I went to work for a local
independent garage. It was there that I honed my skills and
received my ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) master technician
status. After 10 years, I decided on a new venture and opened
my own shop. I purchased and opened Krispin’s Automotive Repair
at 574 River Street in downtown Troy on July 5, 2006.
I specialize in the service and repair of Japanese, domestic,
light truck and most European vehicles. I do advanced check-engine-light
diagnostics and emissions related repairs. I am also a certified
NYS vehicle inspection station.
With the exception of body work/cosmetic repairs, no job is
too big and no job is too small . . . I am capable of doing
it all.
Kismet
Gallery
Michael Fiske, Christina Stott
71 FOURTH ST., TROY, 272-1918
Kismet, established June 2006, operates as an artist-owned
gallery and studio space. Showcased in Kismet’s 3,000-square-foot
gallery is the work of over 125 regional artists and artisans,
including fine art, photography, prints, jewelry, ceramics,
glass art, sculpture, fiber arts, and other unique handmade
curiosities. On the last Friday of the month, we have an opening
and reception in conjunction with Troy Night Out.
Kismet Gallery is a new breed of bottom-up retail enterprises
where we pride ourselves on doing things differently. Unlike
other retailers, we never sell anything made in a sweatshop—just
one-of-a-kind handcrafted items which are sustainable and
manufactured by our family, friends, and neighbors in our
community. At Kismet, we stand for principles over profit;
idealism over hype; values over image; and mutual aid over
competition. Unlike retailers at the mall, for every dollar
spent here at least 70 cents goes back into our community
to pay our artists; the rest goes to keep the gallery open.
As owners, we see ourselves primarily as activists fighting
back against the corporate takeover running roughshod over
our communities. We view the corporate flagpoles dominating
our streets and the city outskirts as being representative
of conquest, not community. Our once-bustling downtowns have
been left derelict, once-plentiful resources have been pillaged,
and once-promised jobs have been axed in favor of sweatshop
labor. The time is now to kick the corporations to the curb
and to reclaim our communities.
Victor
Tulchinsky, D.O.
Pine Hills Family Medicine PLLC, 527 Western Ave., Albany,
482-1570, pinehillsfamilymedicine.com
Dr. Tulchinsky grew up in Guilderland, and in the Guilderland
school system. He graduated from the University at Albany
in 1992. Dr. Tulchinsky graduated from the N.Y. College of
Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury in 2000, and he finished
his residency in family medicine in 2003 from St. Francis
Hospital in Wilmington, Del. After leaving residency, Dr.
Tulchinsky worked for the Indian Health service in the medically
underserved community of Barrow, Alaska, on the Arctic Ocean.
Pine Hills Family Medicine opened Oct. 8, 2007. The practice
is similar to the micro-practice model. Modern life may be
fun, but it is in constant flux with many stressors. Our medical
system has many problems. But Pine Hills Family Medicine likes
to keep things simple and easy for the patients we serve.
We remember that people would prefer to speak to a real, live
person. Dr. Tulchinsky speaks Spanish as well as English.
Melissa Tulchinsky, his wife, speaks Mandarin, Shanghainese,
and Cantonese when available. Our office hours are Monday
and Tuesday 8 AM to 5 PM; Wednesday and Thursday 11 AM to
8 PM. Melissa is also a registered dietitian, and she can
see patients by an appointment only. It is possible to make
appointments outside of usual office hours on an as-needed
basis. Since it is a fairly new practice, the doctor can usually
schedule appointments the same day and often within a few
minutes to hours. Pine Hills Family Medicine is located in
a historic blue Victorian at the northwest corner of Allen
and the split of Western and Madison avenues. Optional services
include osteopathic manipulation, concierge medicine, as well
as home visits. Payment plans are also available. Most major
insurances are accepted including CDPHP, Medicare, Blue Cross
Blue Shield of NE NY, Empire Plan, Aetna, Cigna, United Health
care, and a few others.

The
Counties of Ireland
Robin McDonough
77 3RD St., Troy, 687-0054, thecountiesofireland.com
Our original store opened in Troy in June 2000. Our idea was
to bring something a little different to our customers . .
. something unique. We not only wanted to cater to our Irish
customers but all nationalities, to show people the true crafts
of Ireland. That is why we consider ourselves “Not your typical
Irish shop.” In December 2004, we purchased the Cooper Shoes
building at 77 3rd Street in historic downtown Troy, and in
June of 2005 we re-opened our new shop, making this our permanent
home. Our newly remodeled space is a spectacular sight, with
the original tin ceilings, hardrock maple floors, and vintage
shelves. We still offer the same beautiful merchandise that
is manufactured and imported directly from Ireland because
authenticity is very important to us. We are always adding
new product lines to our store, for example this year we have
added Irish linens, Irish-made tea pots and kettles, just
to name a few.
We have just launched a new Web site in March that we are
truly excited about. This is the next leg of our ever growing
business. Eight years later we still believe that no matter
what age or nationality you are, the Counties of Ireland invites
you to our shop or our NEW online store and experience a bit
of Ireland . . . the Ireland we Love!

It’s so amazing that Bombers Burrito Bar has been “rolling
fatties” for 11 years! When Lynn Beaumont and I opened Bombers
in 1997 (Lynn now owns the popular Cheesecake Machismo on
Hamilton Street), we never thought our little take-out restaurant
would be where it’s at today. Bombers Burrito Bar has grown
to include delivery service for lunch, award-winning
chicken wings, and a kick-ass bar specializing in premium
tequila, margaritas, and draft beers. And, in addition to
spreading the guacamole and sour cream, Bombers will soon
be spreading its burrito love to Schenectady! (Sorry, bad
joke). To find out more about Bombers Burrito Bar, including
