WHAT’S
THE LITERARY FREQUENCY, DAN? The good people behind the College
of Saint Rose’s Frequency North literary series—including
that devotee of the inappropriate, Daniel Nester—have
organized Capital Lit, the “first-ever Albany Lit Mag
& Small Press Fair,” this Saturday (Feb. 20). This gathering
of hundreds of local small presses is your chance to pick
up worthy titles for $4 (books) and $2 (single issues of magazines/journals).
Some of the local notables scheduled to be in attendance are
Shane Jones, Tobias Seamon and Barbara Louise
Ungar. The main event is the book fair, which runs from
noon to 6 PM in the Auditorium of Saint Joseph Hall (985 Madison
Ave., College of Saint Rose, Albany). This will be followed
at 7 PM by a karaoke and poetry party at Valentine’s (17 New
Scotland Ave., Albany). For more info, visit frequencynorth.com.
GET FAT Also Saturday (Feb. 20) is a benefit for the Arts
Center of the Capital Region, titled Fat Saturday Carnivale
for the Arts. It’s from 6:30 PM-midnight at Revolution
Hall (421-425 River St., Troy) and will only set you back
$20. What will you get for your 20 clams? Live music by RESTYS,
the amusing MC and comedian Erick James, juggler-stilt
walker Sean Fagan, belly dancing with Habiba and
Friends, authentic Cajun cuisine from Brown’s Brewing
Company and a silent auction. This is worthy! And sounds like
fun! For more info, call 273-0552.
ONE WEEK ONLY Joe Berlinger, the filmmaker who co-directed
some of the niftiest documentaries of the last 15 years, is
coming to the Spectrum 8 Theatres on Saturday (another
Saturday event!) for a Q&A after the 6:30 PM show of his
acclaimed, award-winning documentary Crude.
Read the review in this week’s issue for details; be aware
that this is a one-week-only booking, so don’t dawdle about
getting to the Spectrum (290 Delaware Ave., Albany) to see
this heartbreaking portrait of environmental destruction and
corporate greed. For more info, call 449-8995.
