THE
POWER OF SURVIVORSHIP There’s an exhibit that opened yesterday
(Wednesday, May 5) in Troy that’s well worth your time. Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute MFA student Clara Tomaz created
Unexpected Journey, which is on view at the
Arts Center of the Capital Region (265 River St., Troy)
through May 13, out of her own experiences as a cancer survivor,
as well as her work with other cancer patients and cancer
support groups. The images are haunting, and occasionally
disturbing; the exhibit notes explain that, “in this complex
and genuine work, cancer is only a vehicle for existential
reflections on personal identity and the very essence of humanness.”

SEE WHAT THEY DID LAST SUMMER It has been suggested that Metroland
has not given sufficient coverage to indie cinema. So, consider
this an effort to do better. This Saturday (May 8), videos
made by teenagers in the Youth Film eXperience project
last summer will be screened at The Linda, WAMC’s Performing
Arts Studio (339 Central Ave., Albany). The project was
part of Grand Street Community Arts’ Youth FX summer
camp, an urban arts experience designed to put “the tools
of media production in the hands of youth with guidance from
skilled artists.” There’s a reception at 6 PM, followed by
a screening at 7 PM, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.

GET SASSY Wait, that should be Sassi. Why not go behind
the scenes at Proctors (432 State St., Schenectady)
with organist Ned Spain and historian Marilyn Sassi
for the Sassi Tour de Proctors this Saturday
(May 8) at 10 AM. This will include a history of Frederick
Freeman Proctor and his “impact on the arts and entertainment
in the extended Capital Region;” an overview of the building’s
architectural highlights; a tour of the new stage house, backstage
and the dressing rooms; and a visit to the Proctors museum,
Robb Alley and the Underground at Proctors. Someone might
even mention the highlights of the upcoming season, just an
nounced, which will include the musicals White Christmas,
Hair, The Lion King, and Fiddler On the Roof.
The tour will take 2 and 1/2 hours; if you’re coming, please
meet in front of the theater doors in the Arcade, facing State

ON THE ROAD (AND IN THE AIR) AGAIN Saratoga Arts is
planning two trips this fall. The first is a visit to Venice—Italy,
not California—from Sept. 12-18, with an optional extension
to “the magical country of Slovenia” from Sept. 19-23. The
second is a visit to Egypt from Oct. 11-18, which includes
a four-day cruise on the Nile. Presentations to discuss these
jaunts will be held May 15 at the Saratoga County Arts Council’s
Arts Center (320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs). The talk about
the Italian/Slovenian trip will be held at 11:30 AM, and the
Egyptian trip will be discussed at 1:30 PM. For more info,
