TUNE
IN TONIGHT Frequency North, the visiting writers series
at the College of Saint Rose, will welcome two guests tonight.
Alexander Chee, winner of a 2004 NEA Fellowship in
fiction—and a bunch of other awards there is no space to detail—will
read from his works, including, presumably his first novel
(Edinburgh) and his soon-to-be-published second novel,
Queen of the Night. Guest number two will be poet-essayist
Kathleen Rooney, whose latest collection, For You,
For You I Am Trilling These Songs was described as “smart
and subtly honed” by Publishers Weekly. The reading
will take place tonight (Thursday, Nov. 11) at 7:30 PM in
the Standish Room in the Saint Rose Events and Athletics Center
(420 Western Ave., Albany.) It’s free. For more info, call

TUNE IN TOMORROW Knowing that this will only whet your appetite
for all things literary, you can go to the University at Albany
tomorrow night for a New York State Writers Institute
event with philosopher, scholar and author Kwame Anthony
Appiah. He will be reading from his latest book, The
Honor Code: How Moral Revolutions Happen, which “explores
the dynamics of social changes that have led to the emancipation
of women, slaves and other disenfranchised groups.” The reading
will be at 7:30 PM in the Performing Arts Center Recital Hall
(University at Albany, 1400 Washington Ave., Albany), and

IT MAY BE HUNDREDS OF YEARS OLD, BUT IT’S NEW TO YOU Capitol
Chamber Artists are always finding something that’s been
mysteriously overlooked, and tomorrow night’s concert offers
more intriguing rarities. This time, the composer is Franz
Liszt, and in addition to some well-known Liszt rearrangements
of works by Bach and Charles Phillippe Lafont, they will perform
the “first publication” of Die Zelle in Nonnenwerth
for violin. As is their custom, they—Mary Lou Saetta,
violin, Irvin Gilman, flute, Aniko Szokody,
fortepiano, and Andre O’Neil, cello—will perform this
well-chosen program of chamber music on period instruments.
The concert will be at 8 PM at the First Congregational Church
in Albany (405 Quail St.), with a “preconcert recital” at
7 PM. Tickets are $16 general, $8 students.
