Bonnie and Clyde

The original promo for Bonnie and Clyde remains one of the great movie trailers. Tentative woodwinds and a plunking banjo underscore the introductions of Faye Dunaway as Bonnie and Warren Beatty as Clyde, a couple of grinning, Depression-era hillbilly bank robbers. The strings swell as they gaze at each other longingly, and the memorable tagline appears in three discrete segments. “They’re young” and “They’re in love” each splash across the screen in a font we’ll call “hippie lovehearts.” The payoff line appears in horror movie all-caps, though, as the bluegrass score kicks in and the bullets fly: “They kill people.” This was expert exploitation of the way Bonnie and Clyde captured the zeitgeist in 1967, thrilling the kids and terrifying their parents. (The trailer even includes one of the film’s shock murders.) This was the summer of love? Bonnie and Clyde, with its violence, romance and jokes, was the brainchild of writers David Newman and Robert Benton; in the end, however, it was the shared vision of director Arthur Penn and producer-star Beatty that made the film poignant, political and compelling in a way that resonated long after the contemporary controversies faded away. And what a cast: Beatty, Dunaway, Gene Hackman, Estelle Parsons, Michael J. Pollard, Gene Wilder and Denver Pyle.
