Nuttier
Than a Fruitcake
You know
you want to get rid of them. Now you can. Anyone in the country
can send their uneaten, wrapped fruitcakesyes, fruitcakesto
a 30,000-square-foot warehouse in Buffalo. This official amnesty
program for the scourge of holiday bounty is aimed at raising
awareness, funds and food for the Food Bank of Western New
York.
Were
trying to get all of the fruitcakes from the holiday seasons
of 2003, 2002 and 2001 off the streets, said Drew Cerza,
CEO of RMI Promotions Group, who is running the campaign for
the food bank.
In addition
to the 50,000 to 60,000 fruitcakes they would like to accept,
the food bank is encouraging other donations too. Clear
out your cupboards, take your fruitcakes, and lets send
em to the needy, said Cerza. Two fruitcakes have
arrived so far.
On the
same theme, the food bank is auctioning off a 32 pound fruitcake,
and will hold the first-ever official fruitcake-eating contest
on Dec. 30the winner will automatically hold the world
record.
On Tuesday
night, Cerza also went on Canadian radio and urged Canadians
to send their fruitcakes to their food banks. Due to food-density
restrictions, fruitcakes are not allowed to cross the border.
The
Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 90 points today. We feel
that our initiative was one of the reasons for this,
Cerza said. Who knows, maybe we can get our national
economy back in high gear too.

Good
Company, Good Candy
Young
attendees enjoyed themselves at the Park South Neighborhood
Associations 6th annual Christmas party, held Saturday
at the Boys and Girls Club building on Delaware Avenue in
Albany. The party attracted more than 100 children, who each
received a toy and a visit with Santa. Dozens of volunteers,
led by neighborhood resident Victor LaFleur, solicited donated
toys and food and showed up early in the morning to decorate.
But the party wasnt just for kids: Residents say its
always a good chance to hang out with their neighbors outside
of meetings.
