Adirondack Strings 1316 Central Ave., Colonie, 458-7717. Concentrating on guitars and amps with a wide selection of acoustic guitars. Also PA equipment, repairs and lessons.

Burnt Hills Music 772 Saratoga Road, Burnt Hills, 399-6047. Guitars, amplifiers, school band rentals, and lessons.

Daddy’s Junky Music 1770 Central Ave., Colonie, 452-9431. A small chain with a reputation for discounts. Focuses on new and used guitars and amps, drums and keyboards.

Drome Sound 3905 State St., Schenectady, 370-3701. One of the more established music stores in the area, with one of the largest selections of new and used equipment around these parts.

Guitar Center 145 Wolf Road, Colonie, 446-1500. This full-service music store offers a full selection of guitars, amps, drums, keyboards as well as used and vintage gear (they take trades). They advertise low prices, but pride themselves on customer service with knowledgeable salespeople.

Hermie’s Parkwood Plaza, Route 9, Clifton Park, 371-4455; 727 State St., Schenectady, 374-7433. Not exclusively for rock & rollers. Along with the requisite guitars, basses and drums, there’s woodwind, brass and more. In fact, Hermie’s boasts that it has “any kind of musical instrument you’re looking for.”

LA’s Hilton Music Colonie Center, Colonie, 459-9400. Full selection of guitars, amps, PAs, band instruments, lessons and more. There’s a new grand piano department too.

New Music 40 Russell Road, Albany, 459-8298. A warehouse o’ instruments: guitars, drums, PAs and more. Friendly to the discount shopper. Also lessons and fully equipped rehearsal space.

Parkway Music 1602 Route 9, Clifton Park, 383-0300. Specializes in vintage/used equipment and repairs but also offers new equipment, band instruments, a PA selection, lessons and rentals, everything but keyboards. A fun amp-browsing spot.

The Rhythm Section 104 Mohawk Ave. (Route 5), Scotia, 388-8488. Full-service music store, catering to beginning-to-professional musicians. Small enough to give personal attention to every customer’s needs, yet large enough to provide value in instruments and accessories.

Saratoga Guitar 438 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, 581-1604. New, used and vintage guitars in this cozy store, along with repair service. Willing to buy and trade.
