Lake
George Island Camping
How
about this for a cheap getaway: Grab your coolers of beer
and meat, your women and your kids (depending on whichever
you got), and head to Lake George for a weekend of reclusive
island camping.
There are 44 state-owned islands in Lake George and on those
there are 387 shoreline campsites. Some of these islands
are so small that they only have one or two sites. Each
of these sites features a place to dock one boat, a fire
pit, a pit privy and a picnic table. But sorry, you’re gonna
have to leave the pooch at home, as there are no animals
allowed. If you like fishing, Lake George is a great spot
for you, with trout, pike, bass and salmon all swimming
around in the two-story fishery of the lake’s deep waters.
You can jet-ski, water ski, go hiking, sail a boat, go for
a swim. It is a rustic, peaceful getaway, but it’s also
very popular, so it is suggested that you make your reservations
well in advance. There’s a Web site you can visit, lakegeorge-vacations.com,
to find the maps of the islands. Give a call to 668-9347
for more help or to book your reservation.
