Small Business 2007

Elissa Halloran Designs

Elissa Halloran, Owner, Photo by Leif Zurmuhlen

225 Lark St., Albany, 432-7090, www.ehdesigns.com

I am very excited to celebrate my sixth anniversary on Lark Street. I love being in the heart of the city, and I love getting to know the customers who come to me. A great excitement for me and my business right now is my new location, which will be two doors down from my current store. I’ve bought a building and am working on shaping it so I can house my jewelry studio and retail space all in one place. The enthusiasm that I receive when I tell people about my new plan is invigorating, and makes the renovation process feel a bit like a community effort. While this is not quite a barn raising, it does take a village to hold a store, and I appreciate all the help and encouragement I’m getting. Another fun thing that’s happening is the First Friday art events. I’ve really enjoyed putting together my work, and the work of other artists for shows at my new spot and in my existing store. I enjoy working with circles of wire, and incorporating them into different jewelry designs. I have also been working on assemblages and mobiles, made out of beads, wire, and found objects. Naming the assemblages is pretty fun. First Friday brings a great energy to the area, lots of new faces and plenty of terrifically familiar ones coming in to say hello and see what’s showing. Come visit me in my new space at 229 Lark Street in mid-2007!

El Mariachi

Freddie Bhola & Patty Bermejo-Bhola, Owners

144 Washington Ave., Albany 465-2568; 289 Hamilton Street, Albany, 432-7580; Route 9 South Broadway, Saratoga, 581-5901, www.elmariachirestaurant.com

We began our family business in the Capital Region 10 years ago. My parents come from Puebla, a beautiful colonial city where the traditional cuisine and outstanding specialties include Mole Poblano, Pipian (a pumpkin seed sauce) and Gorditas Poblanas. Other favorite dishes include Pollo al Chipotle, Tacos al Carbon & Cochinita Pibil, which has also been selected as “Dish of the Year” (Times Union).

I come (Patty Bermejo) from a family of five brothers who have all been in the restaurant business for nearly 20 years. With the strong family tradition that our parents taught us, we managed to start up an authentic Mexican restaurant in the Capital Region. We now have two locations in the downtown Albany area. In 2005, we opened our third location, El Mariachi III, in Saratoga Springs. At El Mariachi II and III we put into practice one of my brother’s expertise in Spanish cuisine, adding the Paella dishes and other traditional seafood dishes from southern Spain.

Here at El Mariachi, our menu typifies the foods from our hometown and other Mexican states. Our recipes have been handed down from generation to generation, starting with our great-grandmothers. Our tequila selection (over 80 choices, 100 percent agave!), house-made Sangria, and special house-flavor margaritas are among our customers favorites. I thank all of our loyal customers for voting us No. 1 10 years in a row (Metroland’s Best Of the Capital Region Reader’s Poll, and Best Mexican 2007, as well as Best Outdoor Dining in 2007!), and my family who stand together to keep the business growing.

Mass Match

Bud and Lanie Delphin

6 university Drive, Amherst, Mass., (413) 665-3218, www.massmatch.com

Shortly after Bud and I married after meeting through a national dating service, we created a local venue for singles to meet.

Since then, I‘ve been on a mission to provide a personal, private, and affordable dating and matchmaking Service for folks in Western Mass. and nearby communities. In the last five years we’ve been responsible for many happy couples—4 weddings this past summer alone. We’ve been written about in many newspapers as well as Yankee magazine. I was even on the cover of Parade magazine.

Joining us makes sense. I coach and am available to help. Many folks aren’t comfortable having their face plastered on the Internet, and I ‘m thanked for not charging the thousands dating services typically charge. Singles are in the same boat. You probably don’t want to meet your beloved at a bar or at work, and friends don’t know anyone right for you. You’re busy and that’s why I’m here . . . to match you with people that make sense. I do the matching—you sit back and relax.

Mass Matchers want a relationship. We’re getting lovely folks. Look at www.massmatch.com.You’ll see how affordable and personal we are. Most people choose to “Meet the Matchmaker.” You can sign up online or call me. When we meet, we’ll go over the application carefully so I can get to know you. You’ll answer 5 more- in-depth questions. Then I match you with wonderful, compatible people you‘d never have an opportunity to meet.

Warmly, Lanie Delphin.

Towne TV

Mickey Valletta

3125 Carman Road, Schenectady, 355-1020, www.townetv.com

Will that be white or almond?

Seventeen years ago I grew restless selling and servicing appliances and TVs. Towne TV had a longstanding, stable clientele and an admirable reputation but I wanted more for our family business.  I tried to think of ways to distinguish ourselves from the competition. Back in the ’60s when I was just a kid, I ran speaker wires from the family console stereo to our basement to create a multi-room stereo system. I thought that this would be a perfect fit for our business. I found some manufacturers that were making in-wall speakers and volume controls for home entertainment systems. I built a display box that I could take from home to home to show people what we could do for them and began pulling speaker wire one or two days a week and on weekends for people who wanted entertainment in their entire home from one central location.

Well the rest is history. Towne TV has grown into a “custom retailer.” We began installing multi-room stereo systems and have grown to install systems in corporate boardrooms and six-figure home theaters with theater chairs and popcorn machines. We do complete home integration systems including home automation, HVAC control, lighting control, security systems and cameras. All customized to the needs of our valued client.

Our good reputation built over 51 years is as important to me as it is to my Mom, who started the business with my Dad back in 1956. We say with confidence that with Towne TV, “You’ll always get the best in Towne!”

Yours truly,

Mickey Valletta

Lo Porto Ristorante Caffe

Carmine, Michael & Sal, Owners

85 4th St., Troy, 273-8546, www.loportocaffe.com

For 17 years brothers Michael Lo Porto and Salvatore Lo Porto have owned and operated Lo Porto Ristorante Caffe, with the help of Salvatore’s son, Carmelo Lo Porto. Lo Porto Ristorante Caffe is a fifth-generation Italian family restaurant that specializes in authentic Italian cuisine. It is owned and operated by two award-winning chefs, Michael Lo Porto (a Certified Executive Chef and an inductee into the American Academy of Chefs) and Carmelo Lo Porto (who is the Executive Chef). Between Michael and Carmelo they have won a combined eight gold, eight silver, one bronze and two Best In Show awards in ACF competitions; hosted prestigious dinners such as Chaine des Rotisseurs, Les Amis d’escoffier Society, Chef of the Year 1993; and have been written up countless times by local newspapers and magazines for their culinary skills. Able to cater events from 5 to 5000 with the same quality and professionalism. A strong sense of family and values with recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation is what sets the Lo Porto family apart from others. The best advice we could give to someone is be prepared for hard work and long hours. You must have a love for food and more love for people. Never think that a job is too small or too large to handle. Always be prepared for the unexpected and never under estimate the voice of the public. Use the talents and strengths you were given and perfect the cuisine you know best. Never ask an employee to do a job that you would never be prepared to do yourself. Always be pleasant because you never know who that next customer could be walking through that door. Lessons learned: Never lose sight of your goals. Always work hard to strive for perfection.

What a challenging and crazy year! Just over a year ago, my wife and I began our third business project. We decided to take a building which was a little bit Lark Street history (formerly Margarita’s) and a little bit Lark Street infamy (also formerly Rome) and put our spin on it. The project began by gutting the entire structure, which took more than a month, and then expanding the current space and utilizing every square foot of available space. This was the first time we had ever taken on a new construction, so every day was a learning process. Over many months of design, and redesign, “the sports bar,” still nameless at that point, began to take shape. By Labor Day, the opening seemed in sight, yet things are not always what they seem, and it was another three months until Legends Sports Bar & Lounge opened its doors. With the sports fan in mind, the menu had burgers, wings, pizza and stadium-inspired hot dogs filling the ranks. Twenty-six giant televisions kept the customer current on sporting events around the world, while the area’s loveliest and liveliest bartenders and servers served up sliders and nachos aplenty. Again, we were blessed to have another success. We couldn’t be happier to welcome Legends to the family. It is the perfect addition to our already great Lark Street mainstays, Justin’s and DeJohn’s. We are so thankful for the support from our regulars and to every person who walks through any one of our doors. ’Til next year…

The restaurant is proudly under new ownership and after a previous 12-year relationship with the Londonderry, Mimi Fhay has taken the business into her arms and resigned as the waitress she was for over a decade.

Our menus offer delicious gourmet sandwiches such as the Jacks Wild which is a delightful combination of cranberry, mayonnaise, apples, and smoked turkey. Or try a tossed salad; for example the Thai Steak with spinach, mandarin oranges and goat cheese. In addition to our fantastic sandwiches and salad, all our desserts are homemade—and to die for! What sets us apart from our competition is our excellent staff and fast service. Join us for lunch (11-5) and dinner (5-9) or our great Sunday Brunch (10:30-3).

Bombers Burrito Bar

258 Lark St., Albany, 463-9636, www.bombersburritobar.com

Meet Tim, Sue, Victoria and Jimmy. These are the four people who run the show at Bombers Burrito Bar! Tim is the head chef, responsible for our delicious chili, fresh salsa and our tangy BBQ chicken. Without Tim, Bombers would crumble, and we’d all be eating leftover pizza. Sue is the Ordering Manager at Bombers. She makes sure Bombers has enough tequila and beer so that you can get drunk and say regrettable things to your date. Victoria is Queen bee at Bombers. She makes sure everyone, including the staff, is behaving themselves after they’ve taken advantage of the cold beer and liquor Sue has ordered. Victoria may also have the best Karaoke voice on earth (which you can see for yourself on Wednesdays). Jimmy is King of All Things Burrito. He makes sure your Jamaican pulled-pork burrito is perfect and that your sweet-potato fries are hot and crispy. Fast fact: Jimmy would love to get tattoos all over his arms, if only his wife would let him. So, come on down and meet these great people at Bombers Burrito Bar.

Engrave A Gift was launched in 1993 with the encouragement of my late husband Dennis.

A woman-owned business for 14 years, we started off as a gift store with a wide selection of all-occasion gifts. Later, we added a wedding department, which took off flying.

In 2006, Engrave A Gift opened its door to corporate sales. The growth of corporate accounts has grown 50 percent. Corporate sales have included recognition programs for many state facilities, and from small business to large industrial corporations. Our many organizations include schools, colleges, churches, hospitals, and non-profit organizations.

We have sales reps on hand, allowing us to better serve our customer base.

What sets us apart from others is that most engraving is done on-site, and there’s no minimum or maximum purchase on corporate orders. We’re in a great location, with friendly atmosphere, and we beat mall prices.

Glass engraving is also offered on-site. Custom logos and sublimation (color-transfer photos) available.

The store is open Monday thru Saturday; call for hours. Looking forward to meeting you soon.

Dinner Me Quickly

Staff members Laura & Judi w/ Owners Joann & Michael Miller

5 Metro Park Road, Albany, 438-3228, www.dinnermequickly.com

Dinner Me Quickly was the first meal-prep business in the Albany area, opening in September 2005. Since opening, we have had about 2000 customers come through the door to assemble healthy, nutritious meals for their families. And, they keep coming back. Obviously, we’re doing something right! Have you been busy at work all day? Kids got you running all over town with after-school activities? Spouse comes in the door saying “What’s for dinner?” (Doesn’t that drive you crazy?) Or you look at the clock, it’s 6 PM, and there’s nothing in the refrigerator or freezer for dinner! What do you do?

Do yourself a favor and come to Dinner Me Quickly. For as little as two hours per month, you can stock your freezer full of healthy, nutritious meals you, your family or dinner guests will love; and using our kitchen will eliminate you dirtying your kitchen. We do all the shopping, chopping, slicing and dicing and the clean up! We do all that!

We take pride in the ingredients we provide, such as our hand-trimmed meats, fresh vegetables and spices, which lend a level of high quality to all of our entrees.

Our menus include a variety of options, from kid-friendly meals to vegetarian meals and desserts. Our goal at DMQ: Relieve the stress and time-consuming trips to the grocery store, and curb unhealthy fast-food dinners which cost more than our delicious entrees.

Why not stop by and check out the Dinner Me Quickly kitchen, or visit our Web site. Let our kitchen be your kitchen. It’s that easy!

B’yond Style

Bridget Kelley on right (owner) and stylists

573 New Scotland Ave., Albany, 454-0050

A unique touch! B’yond Style hair studio was envisioned to fill a void that exists in our local area. We are here to serve you with nothing but pure excellence and a relaxing experience. B’yond Style hair studio’s ambiance will not only relax you, but also uplift your spirits. Throughout the years, I have worked in various exclusive salons. It wasn’t until 2005 that I had the motivation and inspiration to open B’yond Style, at the former site of Vanilla Bean Bakery on New Scotland Avenue. As a first-time business-owner, I had the passion, artistry, innovation, culture, and a strong stylist network to build a full salon that inspires and enhances the professional beauty industry. While professionalism is important, talent is right up there with it. I stress the importance of addressing a client in a courteous manner; that all my stylists be knowledgeable about retail products so they can make smart, helpful recommendations. Education and training is ongoing. I can’t stress how important it is for my stylists to meet client expectations. While my first great start begins in Albany, I believe that feeling great starts with feeling good about yourself. It starts with a great cut, shape and color along with all of our other services, such as waxing, manicures, pedicures, massage therapy and facials. I personally feel great about doing business in Albany and have become involved with local community groups such as Locks for Love, cancer education, and area churches and schools. This is the community where I have found the room to grow in my creative place. I would also like to give a very special thanks to Richard and Sandra Kelley, and Stacey King, master stylist, for their hard work, love and support. We look forward to serving you!

Townsend and Company Hair Salon and Spa

Christopher Feml, Mary Spinelli, Eileen Alicandro, Johnathan Sullivan, Doug Townsend (owner), Robb Penders, Betsy Cotrona

153 S. Swan St., Albany, 449-1535, www.townsendhair.com

I established Townsend and Company Hair Salon in August 1988. I had always loved working downtown, and after 10 years the salon I was working for moved outside the city. With the help of some of my artistic friends, I opened Townsend and Company on the corner of Madison and South Swan, right in the shadows of the Empire State Plaza in a beautiful historic building. Our clients always comment on what a beautiful view we have from our windows. In 1988 we started with four chairs on the first floor, then grew to three more on the second floor. In 1997 I purchased the building and expanded the business to the third floor, which is our spa floor. We do nails, pedicures, waxing and massages. The beauty about this floor is it’s very private, which our male clients certainly appreciate. Our goal here is to make everyone feel at home. One of the beauties of being downtown is the diversity of people that walk through our door and it’s what keeps our energy flowing. Our mission is to try and please everyone the best we can. Taking that extra step. In this business, the industry is always changing so we strive on education. It’s the key to success. We retail Sebastian and Aveda along with American Crew products. We are also proud to announce we now carry Aveda haircolor. Visit our Web site at www.townsendhair.com or call for a consultation today.
