Endorsements: Howie Hawkins for Governor

A vote for Howie Hawkins is a vote for the only progressive gubernatorial candidate. Or a vote to keep the Green Party on the ballot. Or it’s a vote against sitting governor, Andrew Cuomo, who consistently thwarted his own party over the last four years and failed to follow through on a host of campaign promises that he made during the last election.

Hawkins wants to ban fracking, raise the minimum wage and reconvene the anti-corruption Moreland Commission, as well as establish an independent state ethics commission. He advocates for fair elections and full public financing for campaigns. He would support farms and farmland, restrict GMOs, work to transition to organic agriculture, restore funding to the Department of Environmental Conservatism, and increase environmental protection measures. He supports criminal justice reform, human rights and pay equity. And his campaign has accepted no money from big business interests.

For any and all of the above reasons, we recommend voting for Hawkins for New York State Governor this Nov. 4. Even if his chances of winning aren’t great, we like his big heart and lofty goals. He’s currently polling in the double digits, which is great for his party—at the very least, let’s help them stay on the ballot for the next election! (And show Cuomo that he’s not impervious to his electorate.)
