On Monday afternoon, bare grocery store shelves, like these in Price Chopper on Madison Avenue in Albany, demonstrated that Capital Region residents were preparing for the worst as superstorm Sandy barreled toward the East Coast. The former hurricane spared upstate residents but wreaked havoc to our south, particularly in New Jersey, New York City, Long Island and coastal Connecticut. The Associated Press reported that as of Wedneday (Oct. 31), 55 deaths could be attributed to the storm since it hit land in the United States. Millions of businesses and residents lost power, and the cost of the total damage has been estimated to be in the tens of billions.
