The Troy City Council voted unanimously last week to support a bid for a NYSERDA grant, which Councilman Rodney Wiltshire (D-At Large) said would cover up to half the costs required to install a city-owned photovoltaic system. The solar farm will be built on a former landfill, with future plans to expand. “This is a capped, closed landfill,” said Wiltshire. “It was a dead, unusable piece of property that was doing nothing for us.” At full capacity, he added, the project could eliminate the city’s yearly $1.5 million electricity costs, and generate around $5 million in annual revenue.
