James Dewitt Yancey, more commonly known for his hip-hop producer moniker, J Dilla, was one of the most influential figures in the early ’90s hip-hop scene. Dilla (pictured) worked with many of the industry’s noteworthy acts, such as A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, and Common, in addition to creating an extraordinarily large amount of solo work. In honor of the late hip-hop pioneer, Beatshot Music and Red Square will play host to the fifth annual Beat Shot Spins for J Dilla event.
This one-night event will feature eight acclaimed DJs playing tribute to the legendary producer from Detroit. Joining in on the celebration are Sub-bombin artists Midas and Rawhead, and from Mello Music Group, Oddissee. They will be joined by Albany native J-Live. Following a recent album release, PJ Katz will be making an appearance performing with the Dilla Gents along with JB a.k.a. Dirty Moses. MCing the night will be DJs Nate Da Great and Trumastr.
The 5th annual Beat Shot Spins for J Dilla will be presented Saturday (Feb. 2) beginning at 8 PM at Red Square (388 Broadway, Albany). Tickets are $10 and all proceeds benefit the J Dilla Foundation. For more info, call 465-0444.
