Boston Early Music Festival

by The Staff on June 19, 2013

The Boston Early Music Festival returns to the Mahaiwe this weekend with a celebrated, fully staged production of George Frideric Handel’s first opera, Almira.

How celebrated was it in its initial Boston run?

The Wall Street Journal called Almira “a stunning, revelatory production that demonstrated how superb scholarship and execution in both historical stagecraft and musical style can make very old operas live for modern audiences.”

The Boston Globe said, “The score is studded with fiery arias, it boasts some remarkably imaginative instrumental textures, and moves . . . with a forceful rhythmic drive.”

That’s how celebrated it was.

The Boston Early Music Festival will perform Almira tomorrow (Friday, June 21) and Saturday (June 22) at 7 PM, and Sunday (June 23) at 2:30 PM, at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center (14 Castle St., Great Barrington, Mass.). Tickets are $30-$95. For more info, call the box office at (413) 528-0100.
