The Pulitzer Prize-winning Niskayuna native Gilbert King is back in the area to read from and discuss his award winning Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America. The book tells the story of four black men falsely accused of raping a white woman in 1949 and then-future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall’s role in defending them.
The event, sponsored by the New York State Writers Institute, is in conjunction with Celebrate and Advance, a weeklong celebration leading up to the inauguration of the University at Albany’s 19th president, Robert J. Jones.
King will begin with an informal seminar today (Thursday) at 4:15 PM in the Recital Hall in the Performing Arts Center (University at Albany, 1400 Washington Ave., Albany). The reading and discussion will begin at 8 PM in the same location. The event is free and open to the public. For more info, call 442-5620.
