Camille Brown & Dancers begin the Egg’s dance performance series tomorrow (Friday) night with a tragicomic look back at African-American performance and humor. Inspired by Spike Lee’s film Bamboozled, the scope of Mr. TOL E. RAnCE spans the world of black entertainment from the period of minstrel shows to the contemporary sitcom.
The reviewer for the Portland (Ore.) Mercury was struck by the show’s effectiveness: “More important than exposing these stereotypes, or just shaking a finger at the reductiveness of them, Brown makes us consider how we participate in these stereotypes. . . .”
The critic for The New York Times observed, “In looking at the ways blacks are depicted and depict themselves in the media Ms. Brown indirectly poses the question: Has anything changed?”
The performance will be followed by a Q&A with choreographer Camille Brown.
Camille Brown and Dancers will perform Friday (Oct. 25) at 8 PM at the Egg (Empire State Plaza, Albany). Tickets are $26. For more info, call the Egg box office at 473-1845.
