For a half-century now, so much jazz talent has used Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue as an inspirational springboard. In the case of Cuban pianist Omar Sosa, it was a commissioned performance at the 2009 Barcelona Jazz Festival that started him down the road to his latest project Eggun: The Afri-Lectric Experience. Using elements and motifs from Davis’ seminal piece of modal jazz, Sosa infused the work with a flair of Latin jazz and music from the African diaspora.
Sosa’s career is its own diaspora of sorts. Having been raised and trained in Havana, he lived for a time in Ecuador before moving to San Francisco, where he began to assert himself with John Santos’ Machete Ensemble. He now lives in Barcelona where he fronts the Afri-Lectric Sextet.
Omar Sosa will perform at Club Helsinki (405 Columbia St., Hudson) tonight (Thursday, Nov. 14) at 8 PM. Tickets are $30. Call 828-4800 for more info.
