You had to have seen this coming, right? When 20 Feet From Stardom jumped off the film festival circuit and into mainstream consciousness, it was bound to launch the careers of the singers it celebrated. Love is one of a number of backup singers the movie depicts, who not so famously have remained in the shadows of the artists they supported, like Sam Cooke, Dionne Warwick, Elvis Presley and Tom Jones.
Now Darlene Love is getting her due as a proper solo artist. In 2011 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for her relatively unacknowledged work with a who’s who of rock talent. She promptly released a Best Of record that is an authoritative document of rock & roll.
Darlene Love will play the Mahaiwe (14 Castle St., Great Barrington, Mass.) on Friday (Nov. 29) at 8 PM. Tickets are $30-$80. Call 413-528-0100 for more info.
