by Shawn Stone on December 5, 2013

INTRODUCING THE SPEEDO SPRINT GALA  As you may already know, this Saturday (Dec. 7) will see the 8th Annual Santa Speedo Sprint on Lark Street. A benefit for the Albany Damien Center and the HIV/AIDS program at Albany Medical Center—presented by the Albany Society for the Advancement of Philanthropy, the ASAP Daisies and Albany All Stars Roller Derby—registration for the sprint is at 11 AM at the Lionheart and Oh Bar. The race is at 2 PM, starting at the corner of Madison Avenue and Lark Street. As you may not know, organizers have added a new event to the day’s festivities: the Speedo Sprint Gala. This will be held at eba (351 Hudson Ave., just off Lark Street) from 3 to 6 PM. Tickets are $25 ($20 for Speedo sprinters with a wristband) and can be purchased the day of the event. It’s a benefit for eba, too. For more info, visit albanysociety.org or e-mail jalarson@gmail.com.

IT’S NUTCRACKER SEASON  Elsewhere in this week’s edition we highlighted a noted touring production of Tchaikovsky’s beloved Christmas ballet The Nutcracker. Here, I direct your attention to an equally beloved annual tradition in Schenectady, on the Mainstage at Proctors: Northeast Ballet’s edition of The Nutcracker. This year’s production is again supervised by Northeast Ballet founder and artistic director Darlene Myers, and will feature New York City Ballet soloist Lauren Lovette and Chase Finlay, who is also a principal dancer of the NYCB. Performances are Saturday (Dec. 7) at 7 PM and Sunday (Dec. 8) at 2 PM at Proctors (432 State St., Schenectady). Tickets are $20-$50. For reservations and info, please call the box office at 346-6204.

HOUSEKEEPING  We here at Metroland have an e-mail address that I implore you to stop using: metroland@metroland.net. Once upon a time this address was where readers sent letters to the editor and event notices. Now it is a cesspool of spam, a fetid place few monitor. It is largely ignored. Do not send event notices or pleas for coverage or expletive-laced insults there any more. OK? Send event notices to calendar@metroland.net. If you wish to send an official, formal letter to the editor—or a less formal, expletive-laced tirade—send it to editorial@metroland.net. And if you want to send anything by USPS, FedEx, UPS, Amazon Drone, Swiss Army Mountain Rescue Dog or Pony Express, our address is: Metroland, 523 Western Ave., Albany, NY, 12203-1617 USA.
