Brushy One-String

It’s a D-string to be precise. And it’s all Jamaican singer Andrew Chin needs to accompany his seasoned voice.

Discovered by filmmaker Luciano Blotta, singing outside a rural Jamaican recording studio and playing a battered one-string guitar, Brushy One-String became an unlikely Internet star when his YouTube videos went viral. In April 2013, Chin finally took his street act into the recording studio, and Destiny resulted. Even with the amenities of a recording studio, Chin decided to record his stripped-down one-string guitar and tap out percussion on the guitar’s body, just as he always had. It’s undoubtedly one of last year’s most unique and impressive recordings.

A rare performance by the artist will cap off MASS MoCA’s annual free-admission day, so go early to check out the galleries.

Brushy One-String will play MASS MoCA (87 Marshall St., North Adams, Mass.) on Saturday (Jan. 11) at 8 PM. Tickets are $20. Call 413-662-2111 for more info.
