The Beaches of Agnes

She’s not quite the last of the French New Wave filmmakers, but Agnés Varda, who comes across as both grandmotherly and pixie-ish, is the youngest in spirit. Her latest, The Beaches of Agnes, is a semi-documentary memory film of the people and places in her life.

Varda’s a fascinating figure, with a few masterpieces on her decades-long resume (including Cleo from 5 to 7 and Vagabond), and a lot of interesting friends, from Chris Marker to Harrison Ford to her beloved late husband, fellow director Jacques Demy (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg).

As Manohla Dargis wrote in The New York Times last month, “It’s a remarkable history, rich in comedy and occasionally heartbreaking, filled with wise reflections and strange digressions about the wonders of life.”

The Beaches of Agnes will be screened today (Thursday, Aug. 6) through Saturday (Aug. 8) at 7:30 PM, and also at 3:30 PM on Saturday and Sunday (Aug. 9) at Time & Space Limited (434 Columbia St., Hudson).
