Xicohténcatl, 50 Stockbridge Road, Great Barrington, Mass., (413) 528-2002. The name is nearly impossible to pronounce, so most just say shee-ko, but the flavors require no translation if you like regional Mexican cuisine with plenty of cilantro, chipotle, molé and other bold accents. Patroon House, 614 Route 9W, Glenmont, 463-5130. Fine dining in an elegant house just south of Albany, with a tasting menu featured at dinner. Bongiorno’s, 23 Dove St., Albany, 462-9176. Classic Italian fare presented in a comfortable house; the fettuccine dishes and veal preparations are among the specialties, with fettuccine primavera a particularly satisfying meal. Riley’s American Grill, 15 Watervliet Ave., Albany, 438-1118. It’s a menu of American fare with a twist or two, including Cajun spiced meat loaf and the best chili in town. Good seafood entrées, too. Serving lunch Mon-Sat 11:30-3, dinner Mon-Thu 4-9, Fri 4-10, Sat 2-10. AE, D, MC, V.

The Purple Pepper, 3350 Route 9, Valatie, 784-5298. An eclectic menu of delightfully international food from chef Lisa Miller, who coats lamb chops with pesto and offers chicken dishes in Asian, Cajun, Indian, Italian and Thai variations. Serving dinner daily from 4 PM. AE, D, MC, V.

Douglas Anthony’s Italian Steakhouse & Pub, 1839 Van Vranken Ave., Schenectady, 382-3286. Classic Italian fare alongside a selection of steaks, including the DeMarco Special: a generous array of London broil over “smashed” potatoes. Cripple Creek Restaurant, 22 Garden St., Rhinebeck, (845) 876-4355. Extra-
ordinary dining in a small, elegant bistro just off the main drag. Chef Benjamin Mauk and manager Patrick Hays offer an unparallelled experience. Serving dinner Wed-Mon from 5 PM. AE, MC, V.

Morrissey’s, 3246 S. Broadway (Route 9), Saratoga Springs, 584-8200. The old Joe Collins has been refurbished and offers an array of steak and seafood along with wood-fired pizzas. Serving dinner daily 4-11. AE, MC, V.

Mo’s Bar-B-Q, 107 Mill St., Troy, 266-7227. Slow-smoked ribs and chicken and pulled pork, with all the attendant sides, served in an out-of-the-way diner in south Troy. Serving Tue-Sun 10-10. MC, V.

Paradiso il Ristorante, 129 S. Broadway, Saratoga Springs, 580-1717. Family-style Mediterranean Italian fare means that portions are large (and it’s priced accordingly). Try the chicken scarpariello for a taste of good sausage, too; you won’t believe how well the garlic is employed throughout the meal. Serving dinner daily 5 until close. AE, MC, V.

Royal Palace, Scottish Inn, 2788 Hamburg St., Rotterdam. 355-1111. A $9 lunch buffet is more expansive than usual, and dinner items include standard Indian fare with a few surprises like the duck masala. Serving lunch daily 11:30-3, dinner Sun-Thu 5-10, Fri-Sat 5-11. MC, V.

Eleven, 1111 MASS MoCA Way, North Adams, Mass., (413) 662-2004. You’ll find pad thai and roasted chicken as part of an international panoply of offerings served in what might as well be another of this facility’s many galleries. Vendors in the Park, Capitol Park, Albany. Get your hot dogs, pizza slices, sandwich wraps, homemade quiche and even curried goat here when the weather is nice. Serving lunch Mon-Fri 11-2 every reasonably nice day during the summer. Cash only.

New Amsterdam Diner, 234 State Highway 30 (just south of Thruway Exit 27), Amsterdam, 842-1522. Breakfast is always available, and the entrées are generally superb. Gus’s Hot Dogs, 212 25th St., Watervliet, 273-8743. Mini hot dogs, burgers (the Greekburger has onions and meat sauce) or a sausage sandwich. It’s difficult to spend more than three bucks here. Serving Mon-Sat 10:30-10. Cash only.

D’Raymond’s, 269 Osborne Road, Loudonville, 459-6364. Popular strip-mall spot serving Italian-American classics with freshness and flair, along with prodigious salads and appropriately decadent desserts. Serving Mon-Fri 11:30-2:15 and 5-10; Sat 4-10. AE, CB, DC, MC, V.

Sushi Art Japanese Cuisine, 2025 State St., Schenectady, 388-8600. Along with excellent sushi and standard Japanese fare, enjoy tableside barbecue (cook your own meat) at this elegantly decorated eatery. Serving Tue-Thu 11-10, Fri-Sat 11-11, Sun noon-10. AE, V, MC.

Martin’s, 49 Railroad St., Great Barrington, Mass., (413) 528-5455. Order breakfast all day (well, until 3 PM closing time) at this popular Berkshire mainstay that catersff equally to locals and weekenders. Basic breakfast and lunch staples complemented by more contemporary fare, all at affordable prices. Serving daily 6 AM-3 PM. Cash only.

Lanie’s Café, 471 Albany Shaker Road, Loudonville, 438-5005. A varied menu that ranges from bar appetizers, sandwiches and pizza to fancier fare like veal Française and seafood fra diavolo. If you’re really hungry, try the stuffed steak, but beware: Portions are huge. Serving Mon-Thu 11 AM-midnight, Fri-Sat 11 AM-2 AM, Sun noon-midnight. AE, D, DC, MC, V.

The Cat’s Meow, 14 Karner Road (Route 155), Guilderland, 456-1895. Classic pub fare—fried lots-of-stuff, burgers, fish—with an emphasis on homemade. If it’s a meatloaf day, you have no other choice. Serving Mon-Sat 11:30-11. AE MC, V.

McGuire’s, 353 State Street, Albany, 463-2100. Andrew Plummer is back in this casually elegent Center Sqaure grill serving progressive American food, including consistently excellent seafood, beef and sides, with adventurous wine listings and knowledgeable staff. Crabapple Farm Restaurant, 857 Main St., Clifton Park, 877-8202. A historic grist mill has been modeled into a lovely restaurant with such specialties as tenderloin en croute, poached salmon in a vanilla cream sauce and pistachio-crusted pork tenderloin with a spicy plum sauce. Mercato’s Restaurant & Pizzeria, 155 Delaware Ave., Delmar, 475-7777. A fine example of the neighborhood Italian restaurant, with original pizza recipes, inexpensive veal entrées and a general sense of bonhomie. Serving Mon-Thu 11-10, Fri-Sat 11-11, Sun Noon-9. AE, DC, MC, V.

Ravenous, 21 Phila St., Saratoga Springs, 581-0560. A crêperie that serves savory and sweet concoctions for brunch, lunch and dinner, with true-to-tradition Belgian pommes frites as well. Montcalm Restaurant, 1415 Route 9 (Northway Exit 20), Lake George, 793-6601. An area staple, serving for more than 45 years, with a solid menu of seafood and steaks (prime rib a specialty) and excellent service. The Sedgwick Inn and Restaurant, 17971 Route 22, Berlin, 658-2334, An excellent autumn destination, with a fine-dining restaurant specializing in game and fish (the grilled venison is superb) and comfortable, antiques-laden guest rooms. Serving dinner Wed-Sat 5-9 PM, Sun 1-8. AE, D, MC, V.

The Hidden Café, Delaware Plaza, Delmar, 439-8800. Burgers, salads and wraps, yes, but the prize here is the Mediterranean menu with great hummus, kebabs and spanakopita. Serving daily 11-10. MC, V.

The Mexican Connection, 41 Nelson Ave., Saratoga Springs, 584-4466. A reliable, homey, comfortable source of Southwestern fare—big portions, nice flavors and a great selection of tequila. Serving daily from 4 PM. (Closed Mon-Tue as racing season winds down.) D, DC, MC, V.

Sargo’s at the Saratoga National Golf Club, 485 Union Ave., Saratoga Springs, 583-4653. Golden Phoenix Buffet, St. James Square Plaza, 2309 Nott St. E., Niskayuna, 344-7518. Two hundred items on seven buffet tables, as good as can be expected from chafing-dish fare, but the Mongolian barbecue station lets you make your own meal. The American Hotel, Main Street, Sharon Springs, 284-2105. An inventive array of continental fare served in the elegant surroundings of a handsome hotel in a historic resort town busily making a comeback. The Olde Kristel’s Inn, 654 Saratoga Road, Burnt Hills, 399-7398. New chef-owner Bill Clark brings back the old Kristel’s traditions with fare such as chicken and biscuits, pot roast, meatloaf and a fancy chicken cordon bleu. Jake’s Round-Up, 23 Main St., South Glens Falls, 761-0015. An eclectic approach to Southwestern fare, served in a fun-to-look-at emporium of different dining areas. Former Olde Dater chef Scott Ringwood offers fine dining at reasonable cost at the former Sweet Nothings building; try the pork rack or the duck breast for fresh takes on old favorites.
