CDs, Tapes & Vinyl

In addition to the specialty stores described below, big-box department and/or electronic stores including Best Buy (Crossgates Mall), Circuit City (Crossgates Commons), Target (various locations) and Wal-Mart (various locations) have music sections and often offer first-week discounts on major releases.

 

Barnes & Noble

20 Wolf Road, Colonie, 459-8183; Mohawk Commons, 402 Balltown Road, Schenectady, 377-0349; 3029 State Route 50, Saratoga Springs, 583-7717. The massive bookstore also has a music section that covers a wide range of styles.

Blue Note Record Shop

156 Central Ave., Albany, 462-0221. Although Blue Note’s on-hand stock is about 75-percent vinyl—the store’s specialty is old 45s—it also stocks cassettes and CDs. The store also does a big mail-order business.

Borders Books & Music

59 Wolf Road, Colonie, 482-5816; 395 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, 583-1200. Offering the area’s largest stock of CDs in all the mainstream genres, the store also has a credible import section and a music-friendly atmosphere. Plus, you can hear it before you buy it.

Caribbean Records and Accessories

19 Central Ave., Albany, 426-0056. Carries CDs, vinyl and cassettes, specializing in reggae; also sells beepers, telephones and other items.

Celtic Treasures

456 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, 583-9452. In addition to musical instruments, the store carries more than 2,500 Celtic-music titles on CD.

Coconuts

Stuyvesant Plaza, Albany, 438-3003; Clifton Country Road, Clifton Park, 383-3644; Latham Farms, Latham, 783-7372; 446 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, 583-7088. CDs, videos and DVDs galore.

Disc Go Round

20 Mall, Guilderland, 452-0338. Buys and sells new and used CDs, DVDs and video games, including imports.

FYE

Colonie Center, 437-0727; Crossgates Mall, 464-0199; Delaware Plaza, Delmar, 439-2449; Latham Circle Mall, Latham 785-3651; Clifton Country Mall, Clifton Park, 371-5599; Rotterdam Square Mall, Schenectady, 374-1360. Trans World Entertainment’s biggest area stores are heavily stocked with current CDs, videos, DVDs and games; the Colonie Center location also has a large video arcade and discount section.

Last Vestige

173 Quail St., Albany, 432-7736; 437 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, 226-0811. Choose from a wide array of rare vinyl records (both new and used), CDs, tapes, concert recordings and one of the area’s best selections of music-related videos.

Punk Rock Reptile

340 Central Ave., Albany. Hardcore, metal, and punk-rock CDs, plus clothing and jewelry.

Red’s Underground

13 Broad St., Glens Falls, 798-2040. Unique store specializing in recycling CDs, videos, DVDs and games. Most music genres found here.

River Street Beat Shop

197 River St., Troy, 272-0433. Troy’s only record store featuring new and used vinyl, CDs, cassettes, DVDs and VHS tapes. Also regular free live music featuring local and national musicians.
